The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called on the British Government to relax the new rules on immigration to permit entry of foreign workers. The CBI, an employers group, said this is exigent in order to ease the labour shortages stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Companies have complained about the paucity of workers as the economy reopened following the COVID lockdown. Labour shortages seem to most preponderant in sectors like hospitality, logistics and food processing. This has culminated in copious gaps in supermarket shelves and the closure of restaurants.
The CBI has called for the classification of blue collar positions like drivers, welders, bricklayers and butchers as SHORTAGE OCCUPATIONS for the purpose of immigration. There are reports that due to the shortage of drivers and competitive supply, some employers are offering 5,000 GBP in signing bonuses.
Classification of certain roles under shortage occupations will permit the relative ease of access to visas. Employers would also be able to pay the immigrant workers below the remuneration thresholds set for migrant workers under the new immigration system of the United Kingdom.
