There were 799 arrivals of migrants into the EU from Turkey in the last week of August, This represents the highest number of entries since March of 2020 when 970 arrived due to the border tensions between Turkey and her western neighbour Greece.
Travel restrictions due to the pandemic curtailed migrant crossings into the EU. The proliferation in migrant crossings is concurrent with the recent political crisis in Afghanistan.
Turkey President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, told the EU that Turkey would not become a refugee warehouse following the crisis in Afghanistan. There have reported cases of accosting of Afghan migrants totalling over 500 in the space of three days in August.
Crossing into the EU for some migrants involves the Turkey – Greece border. Italy is also seen as an alternative route. Over 5,000 people have arrived in Italy through Turkey in 2021 alone. This statistic was revealed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) which is a refugee agency of the United Nations.
