International Student Enrollment at US Universities dropped due to Pandemic

Data from a recent study revealed that the enrollment of International students in US universities fell by as much as 15 per cent in the 2020-2021 academic year. The decline is inextricably attributed to the pandemic.

Data from a survey by the Pew Research Center shows that nearly 60 per cent of adults from 16 advanced economies across the globe describe American Universities as either the best in the world or above average in comparison to those of other equally developed nations.

Despite this, the number of foreigners enrolled for university degrees in the USA fell sharply based on data released by the Institute of International Education which is likely a precipitate of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The data shows that International students accounted for 4.6 per cent of total enrollment at American higher institutions which is equivalent to less than 1 million persons. This represents a 15 per cent drop from the 2019-2020 academic year. It is also the first time since 2014-2015 that fewer than one million foreign students have enrolled for study in US colleges.

China (35%), India (18%), South Korea (4%) and Canada (3%) provide the highest number of International students enrolled in the USA. The drop in foreign students was driven by the significant decline in the number of first time students with many facing challenges in the form of border closings, flight cancellations and other pandemic relation constraints.
