2021 Flashback: International Students in Australia

International students in Australia struggled with their studies due to the pandemic. They were not permitted access into the country until mid-December.

In person classes were delayed two weeks beyond their December 1st scheduled date. The threat of the Omicron variant led the government to reimpose travel bans on International students leading to expressions of frustrations on the part of the students as they had lost money spent on travel fares.

On December 15, 2021, following nearly two years of travel restrictions, the Oceanic country reopened its borders to thousands of International students.

Catrina Jackson, the Chief Executive of Universities Australia stated that the move to reopen the country’s borders would permit an influx of over 133,000 international students. Catrina stated that International students offer a rich contribution to both student experience and the wider Australian Community.

Data from the Australian Department of Education revealed that there were 69,427 fewer enrollments at the country’s universities in 2021 compared to 2019.
