Six migrants killed by guards in Libyan Detention Centre

Six migrants were shot dead by guards at a Libyan detention centre. This was revealed bry the United Nations Agency for migration. This comes following a violent crackdown against refugees and asylum seekers in the North African country.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) revealed that overcrowding at the Ghot Shaal detention centre in Tripoli snowballed into chaos in the facility.

Frederico Soda, who is the UN agency’s Libya chief, stated that shooting broke out at the detention centre and six migrants were fatally wounded.

Libyan authorities have detained over 5,000 migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in recent weeks. Most of the detainees are from Sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations Refugee Agency reported that the detainees were housed in overcrowded centres under unsanitary conditions.

Of those detained, 215 are children with over 500 women. At least 30 of the women are said to be pregnant based on estimates provided by the IOM. Amnesty International has called on authorities in Libya to charge those culpable of criminal activities while releasing children and the innocent.
