2021 Flashback: International Students in the United Kingdom

Throughout 2021, the United Kingdom remained opened for International students despite the extenuating circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic. This was very in sharp contrast to the stringent travel bans in Australia and New Zealand, two other popular destinations for International Students.

The number of International Students enrolled for study in the UK in 2021 was 38 percent higher than pre-pandemic levels.

A report provided by the Mitchell institute stated: “In the case of the United Kingdom, new International students are 37 percent higher than pre-COVID. By contrast, new student visa applications for Australia have plummeted by 70 percent in the one year period leading to September 2021.”

The United Kingdom government is targeting a 75 percent increase in enrolled International students by 2023.
