Technical Error sees Canada accept 7,000 more applications for the TR to PR pathways

No less than 7,000 more applications for the graduate stream of the recently launched Temporary Residence to Permanent Residence (TR to PR) pathways were received by the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

A memo circulated internally revealed that the immigration department received significantly more applications than they envisaged. Within 25 hours of launching the TR to PR program, the department reached its maximum threshold of 40,000 international student graduates.

The TR to PR pathways officially launched on May 6, 2021 and will remain open till November 5, 2021. An additional 7,307 applications were accepted as a result of a technical infraction with the electronic system. Simultaneously submitted applications were only accepted as a single application due to an error with the live counter. Thus, if three applicants were to submit at exactly the same time, the system would count the three as one.

The immigration department submitted a request to Minister Marco Mendicino to approve a temprorary policy to permit all submitted applications to be processed. The policy was approved on June 28, 2021 allowing the extra 7,307 applications to be processed.
